[Combined Ability Discovered: Guided Shot.]
[Type: Combined (Ember Spit + Thermal Sense).
Damage: 15 (fire, precise). Range: 5 meters. Cost:
10 EN. Cooldown: 8 seconds. Precision: high against
cold targets, medium against neutral.]
[Note: Only 2% of Fire Salamanders discover this
combination. Impressive. For a salamander.]
Impressive. For a salamander.
The System had just complimented and insulted me in the same sentence. The efficiency was admirable. But the data point was more interesting than the tone: two percent. Of all the fire salamanders that had ever existed in the history of this System, only two in a hundred had discovered that their two elemental abilities could be fused into something superior. Not because the combination was impossible. Because salamanders didn't experiment. They had instinct. They had abilities. But they didn't have the curiosity to test what happened when you used both at the same time in a specific way against a specific target under specific conditions.
Salamanders weren't programmers. Salamanders didn't do QA testing. Salamanders didn't have the pathological obsession with finding edge cases that broke the expected rules of the system. Salamanders hunted, evolved, and died using the tools the System gave them the way the System intended. They were users who read the manual and did exactly what the manual said. I was the user who read the manual, found the contradiction on page forty-three, and exploited it to do something the manual didn't authorize but didn't explicitly prohibit either.
Two percent. Ninety-eight of every hundred salamanders never discovered this. Ninety-eight of every hundred died being exactly what the System expected them to be.
I wasn't going to be one of them.
Fifteen damage. Five meters of range. High precision against cold targets. The Glacial Toad was the most intense cold signature within fifty meters. Against it, Guided Shot wasn't going to miss. It was, in combat design terms, a weapon made to fight exactly what I needed to fight. A fire projectile that sought cold. An ability that turned the Toad's elemental nature into its own vulnerability. Every degree of temperature its body absorbed from the environment was one more degree of signal for my shot to find it.
The Toad wasn't just my target. It was my bullseye.
Ten Energy per shot. With eighty-one maximum EN, that gave me eight shots. Eight shots at fifteen damage. A hundred and twenty gross damage points. Against the Toad's forty Resistance, effective damage depended on the reduction formula the System used â but even with generous reduction, eight clean shots would inflict damage that couldn't be ignored. Not enough to kill it. But enough for the cost-benefit equation to stop being favorable.
I reworked the plan calculations. With Guided Shot replacing Ember Spit as the primary weapon, the numbers changed. Kiting was more viable because five meters of range gave me two additional meters of safety distance. Precision eliminated the problem of accumulated misses. The superior damage reduced the required hits from ten to six or seven.
Six or seven hits. At eight seconds of cooldown each. Less than a minute of active combat, plus movement and repositioning time between shots.
